Prayers That Get Answered Even When You Don’t Know What to Say

Are there times you don’t know what to pray and you want to tell God how you feel, but you also want your prayer to be effective, i.e. you want to see your situation change?

We know that one of the key components of prayer is using the word of God. This is the foundation of effective prayer, but today I want to bring your attention to a loophole, so to speak. I use the term “loophole” because there have been countless times as a believer where I was taught that praying emotional prayers does not move God. But today I am here to reveal and remind you of the truth — that effective prayer is not only based on the word of God, but is also based on your vulnerability, your transparency with God. But before we get there, let’s take a look at the perfect solution in a circumstance that you have less than the perfect words.

The first point I want to bring your attention to is that God tells us that the Holy Spirit helps us. John 14:26 says, “The helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” A helper is someone who is suitable for the task. A helper is a helpmate, an assistant, a teammate. This verse lets us know that the holy Spirit can help us in any situation and that the Lord has actually designated the Holy Spirit as help to us. So when we reach out to the Holy Spirit, we can assume that he will help us.

Nextly, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. In Romans 8:26, God tells us: “In the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” This is a reminder that while we don’t know what we ought to pray, God knows what we need and how to get it to us, we just need to acknowledge that He is our problem solver and ask Him for help. And He has someone whom he specifically calls our help. And our help — the Holy Spirit also intercedes for us.

The third point is that Jesus intercedes for us. In Romans 8:34, it says “Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. What a powerful verse, because here we learn that Jesus Christ is interceding for us at the right hand of God! The word interceding means to mediate, act as an intermediary, intervene on behalf of another, take action, plead, petition, supplicate, entreat, and conciliate. So in this moment be refreshed and strengthened, knowing that Jesus Christ is acting as our intermediary. He’s intervening on our behalf. He’s petitioning the Father concerning us. He’s pleading on our behalf. And to drive this point home, Hebrews 7:25 says, “Consequently, he is able to save to the UTTERMOST, those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. This is a blessing because right here we see that Jesus Christ lives to make intercession for us.

He lives to petition on our behalf. He lives to intervene on our behalf to act as an intermediary, to plead concerning the person reading this blog concerning me concerning your family and friends and other believers. And then lastly in 1 John 2:1, he says, “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin, but if any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ, the righteous. All of these verses that I’ve drawn your attention to are important because they emphasize the help that we have through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. And they remind us that we have perfect help as believers.

Now let’s connect the dots — in times that you don’t know what to pray and you want to tell God how you feel, but you also want your prayer to be effective and you want to see your situation change— ask Jesus and the Holy Spirit to pray for you!

And this is important because Holy Spirit prays according to the mind of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11 says, “No one can know a person’s thoughts, except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own spirit. And in 1 John 14:16, we are reminded that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through him. So if you want to get to God, Jesus is our key. That being said, we can automatically assume that when we ask the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ to pray for us, the prayers will be spot on! They are perfect and they will lack nothing. Because the Holy Spirit operates by the mind of God. He is literally praying according to what God says and thinks concerning His children, His righteous character, and who He is. So you’re asking God for perfect help when you ask the Holy Spirit or Jesus to pray for you.

The fourth and final point is to share with God what is on your heart, how you are feeling and what concerns you because he tells us that he cares for us and that we should cast our cares on him in 1 Peter 5:7. So this is your doorway to not only use the word of God in effective prayer, but to be vulnerable, which is a part of praying, effective prayers. So after having asked Jesus and the Holy Spirit to intercede for you, you can also stand on the word of God that says in Psalm 5:42 “Hear my prayer, O God, give ear to the words of my mouth, and in Psalm 27:7, where it reads “Here, O Lord, when I cry with my voice, have mercy also upon me and answer me.”

These verses remind us that even though we may not have the perfect prayer on our own, that God does give ear to the words of our mouth, and he hears us when we cry or call out to Him. So when you don’t know what to pray, but you need help, here are four things to do for perfect help:

#1 Ask the Holy Spirit to pray for you concerning the matter.

#2 Ask Jesus to pray for you concerning the matter.

#3 Cast your cares on the Lord and remind him that he says we can do so because he cares for us. Tell him what concerns you. Tell him what is on your heart, because this is an invitation for effective prayer that is based on the word of God, but is also based on being vulnerable with God.

#4 Tell God what you are hoping to experience as a result of him answering your prayers. This is an act of faith because it says to God — hey God, I believe you not only hear me but that your answer will help me. It will solve a problem. And here’s what I would like to experience as a result of your help Lord — joy, peace, etc., which are things that you’ve already promised, provided, and given access to as believers.

And if you are saved but have not been filled with the Holy Spirit yet, Father I pray that you would pour out your spirit upon the person reading this and fill them with the Holy Spirit. Fill them that they would speak with other tongues, that they would speak the word of God with boldness, and that they would engage you by way of the Holy Spirit who is our perfect helper. In the name of Jesus, I pray amen. Be refreshed! Talk to you again soon.
